BUDGET COMMENT BY MAXOL OIL - DISMAY AT PETROL PRICE HIKE

Europe’s leading independent oil company, Maxol, has expressed its dismay at the increase in petrol prices - four pence per litre effective from 6pm this evening (2 July 1997).

Mr Brian Donaldson, Group Marketing Director, says that because Northern Ireland is essentially a rural market, the motorists’ pocket is harder hit because there is no acceptable alternative public transport.

"The duty on unleaded petrol is now 40.26 pence per litre. If you include VAT, approximately 78% of the price of a litre of petrol now goes to the Government in tax," he said.
