FORD FOCUS SCOOPS MAXOL NORTHERN IRELAND CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Ford's highly successful Focus, already voted European Car of the year has just received another top accolade - Maxol Northern Ireland Car of the Year.

The Focus, already a best seller, was voted top car by members of the Ulster Motoring Writers Association at the annual Car of the Year Awards held recently at the Culloden Hotel. Members of the UMWA picked the Focus for it's superb styling, great driving characteristics and very competitive pricing structures. Ford's Focus is based on an all new platform that leads Ford into the future and builds on a reputation for excellent driving dynamics. Distinctive New Edge design influences both the exterior and interior of the Focus and brings a fresh look to the class.

The Focus faced some stiff opposition from other award winners announced at the event.

The best Small Car went to the very popular Renault Clio, while the Focus also picked up the Family Car award. Subaru's innovative Forester was declared Leisure Vehicle of the Year while the choice in the Executive category was the Renault Laguna V6. The Diesel Car of the Year prize went to the 110bhp turbo diesel version of the new Volkswagen Golf while the Sports Car of the accolade went to the highly desirable 155mph Jaguar XKR.

Brian Donaldson, Group Marketing Manager of Maxol said: 'Maxol is delighted to be able to support the Car Industry by sponsoring the 1999 Northern Ireland Car of the Year Awards. The awards presented today not only reflect innovative car design but also value for money and vehicle performance. I am especially pleased to see that the new Volkswagen turbo diesel has been awarded a prize. This coincides with the launch of Maxol's Cleaner Diesel, a new and innovative fuel which cuts sulphur emissions by an impressive 90% giving customers a greener alternative to other fuels on the market'.

Commenting on the awards, Patrick Burns, Chairman of the Ulster Motoring Writers Association said,'Having tested over sixty new models over the past year, the choice of new car of the year was a difficult one, but the Focus' style and dynamicism shone through...'
