MAXOL IRISH UNIVERSITIES RUGBY TOUR OF AUSTRALIA
Following the recent Budget increases in fuel tax, Maxol, Europe's leading independent oil company, has announced an investment of Following the Irish Universities Rugby Team’s successful win of the Triple Crown earlier this year, the team is now going on tour down under to pitch their skills against the Australian Universities. The tour of Australia will kick off on Friday 11th July and will end on the 7th August with the all important test match against the Australian Universities team.
With a total of seven games to be played during the tour, an attractive fixture list has been scheduled. Other games of particular note, besides the test match, are with Sydney University and Queensland University. A squad of 30 Irish players has been selected, representing Universities throughout the island of Ireland including: UCG, UCD, UCC, QUB and DU.
Maxol have been sponsors of Irish Universities Rugby for the past three years and during this sponsorship the team have had a successful tour of South Africa, triumphed over Scotland and Wales in 1995, beat the Eagles with a new squad in 1995 and won the Triple Crown this year. In 1997 seven of the players for the Irish Senior team previously played for the Irish Universities, including Paul Wallace who has gone on the play with great success for the Lions squad. This is testament to the calibre of players that Irish Universities Rugby produces.
