MAXOL SPONSORS CHERNOBYL AID IRELAND INITIATIVE

Maxol, Europe’s leading independent oil company, is sponsoring Chernobyl Aid Ireland Ltd. with the use of a 40ft articulated truck, to bring relief to 200 children in Grozova Orphanage, Belarus, Chernobyl. The relief group departed on the five day journey to Belarus from New Ross port on Saturday May 1st at 3:00pm and return to Ireland after a month’s work there.

Chernobyl Aid Ireland is in its second year of the aid programme, specifically designed, under the leadership of Waterford ambulance driver, Liam Grant, to support the 200 children living in Grozova Orphanage. Also undertaking the journey to Belarus with Liam are, Mick Denton from Wexford, Billy Drennan and John Sexton from Waterford, Michael Culleton, Kildare and Tony Quirke, from Youghal in Co. Cork.

Caroline Keenan, Brand Development Manager, Maxol, and a native of Co. Waterford herself, said of the sponsorship:

"We are very proud to be able to sponsor this charity. We feel that Chernobyl Aid Ireland is commendable in its dedication and persistence in both helping the people of Chernobyl and in getting the message of their plight across. Maxol has enjoyed a successful year’s trading and we are pleased as a company to be in a position to give something back".

The type of aid being despatched in the Maxol truck includes, oatmeal, pasta, vegetables, children’s clothes and shoes, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, school books, biros, blankets, a prefabricated playground and personal gift boxes for each individual child. In early November 1998 a Chernobyl Aid Ireland team flew out to Belarus, to assess the aid programme carried out earlier in the year. The results are already evident with the children being visibly cleaner and healthier.

Liam Grant, Chernobyl Aid Ireland comments:

"In October 1997, Chernobyl Aid Ireland identified Grozova Orphanage as particularly deprived, even by the standards of radiation polluted Belarus. After the Chernobyl radiation disaster of 1986 many tens of thousand of people have been displaced, especially the most vulnerable among whom are the children in State care Grozova Orphanage. We greatly appreciate the much needed support of Maxol, and thank them for their donation and hope that the Irish people will continue to give their support to our volunteers who willingly give their time and skills for the children in Grozova."
